What time does the boat parade start? Every listing says 6:30 p.m. from the Tip of Lido Isle, and the 2026 route page repeats it: "as in previous years, the parade will begin at approximately 6:30 p.m. each night." For most of the harbor, that time is wrong by an hour or more. On the official 2026 route map, the lead boats reach Woody's Wharf at 6:51, Balboa Island at 7:45, and Lido Marina Village at 8:46. The parade doesn't get back to the Tip of Lido Isle until 9:00.
The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs Wednesday through Sunday, December 16 to 20, hosted again by the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce. The organizers expect more than 100 decorated yachts and boats on a 14-mile route. On a course that long, the 6:30 start barely matters. What decides your night is the minute the boats reach your stretch of shoreline, and that minute also tells you which drone show to catch and which restaurant tables put you right on the route.
A two-and-a-half-hour loop, timed to the minute
The official 2026 route map numbers 57 points and gives each one an estimated time. Grouped by stretch of shoreline, the loop looks like this.
| Stretch | Estimated window | Named stops on the 2026 map |
|---|---|---|
| Lido Isle, outbound | 6:30 to 6:49 | Lido Isle Yacht Club 6:35, Lido Isle Bridge 6:45, Rhine Channel 6:49 |
| West Peninsula | 6:51 to 7:02 | Woody's Wharf 6:51, Peninsula Village 6:52, Marina Park 6:54, 15th Street Beach 6:57, 10th Street Beach 7:02 |
| Balboa Village | 7:14 to 7:16 | Newport Landing 7:14, Balboa Fun Zone and Balboa Pavilion 7:15, Davey's Locker 7:16 |
| Harbor entrance | 7:25 to 7:41 | Peninsula Point Beach 7:25, Pirate's Cove 7:32, China Cove 7:33, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club 7:41 |
| Balboa Island | 7:45 to 8:11 | Bridge 7:45, Little Island Beach 7:48, South Bayfront 7:54, Ferry Landing 8:01, North Bayfront 8:07, Bridge 8:11 |
| Inner harbor and Mariners' Mile | 8:18 to 8:45 | Harbor Island 8:18, PCH Bridge 8:26, Bay Shores 8:30, Balboa Bay Resort 8:35, Rusty Pelican 8:43, The Winery 8:45 |
| Lido, return | 8:46 to 9:00 | Lido Marina Village 8:46, Lido Park and Lido Bridge 8:50, Via Lido North Genoa Beach 8:53 |
The spread between the earliest and latest public viewing spots is close to two hours. Someone on 15th Street Beach has seen the whole parade go by before 7:00. Someone at Via Lido North Genoa Beach doesn't see the first boat until almost 8:53. These are estimates for the lead boats, and the parade takes time to pass any given point. Both stops are on the same peninsula, a short drive apart, and their evenings barely overlap.
Balboa Island is the only stretch of the route the parade passes twice
The route circles Balboa Island. Aside from the start and finish at the Tip of Lido Isle, that makes the Balboa Island Bridge the one point on the map listed twice, first at 7:45 on the way in and again at 8:11 on the way out. In the 26 minutes between, the boats pass Little Island Beach at 7:48, Little Island Point at 7:51, South Bayfront and the Grand Canal at 7:54, the Balboa Island Ferry Landing at 8:01, Collins Island at 8:03, and North Bayfront at 8:07.
For anyone watching from the island, that means two decent options. You can stay on South Bayfront and watch the parade pass once. Or you can start at the bridge at 7:45, walk along the bayfront as the boats move around the island, and finish back at the bridge as they head toward Harbor Island at 8:18. On foot, the island gives you more parade time than any other stop on the route.
The drone shows sit at the two ends of the clock
The nightly drone shows have been part of the parade since at least 2023, and 2026 uses the same two sites as 2025. What makes them useful is where they sit on the timetable. The official parade site lists shows over Peninsula Park, near the Fun Zone, at 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. every night. The shows over the Balboa Bay Club run at 6:15 and 8:15 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, and at 6:00 and 8:15 p.m. on opening night.
Line those up against the route map and each site pairs with the parade pass nearest to it:
- Balboa Village: the 6:45 Peninsula Park show, then the parade at the Fun Zone and Balboa Pavilion around 7:15. Stay through the 8:00 show and you've seen the parade and both Peninsula Park shows from about the same spot.
- Mariners' Mile and the Lido end: the 8:15 Balboa Bay Club show, then the parade at Balboa Bay Resort around 8:35, Mariners' Mile at 8:42, and Lido Marina Village at 8:46.
The organizers say the two sites make the shows "visible from both ends of the harbor." The schedule adds a second advantage. On either side, the drone show fills the wait right before the boats arrive.
Opening night runs on an earlier clock
Wednesday, December 16, starts well before the boats do. Marina Park at 1600 W Balboa Blvd. is the largest public viewing location on the route. It has 177 parking spaces, and admission to the opening-night event is free. The event starts at 4 p.m., and the fourth annual Holiday Market with Vogels Vibes runs from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with more than 35 local makers, food vendors, live music, photo ops and kids' activities. A fireworks display off the Newport Pier opens the parade at about 6:15 p.m., as long as conditions are safe.
The parade site publishes two different times for Marina Park. The Marina Park page says the parade "sails by Marina Park at 6:45 p.m." The route map lists Marina Park at 6:54. If you're on the lawn by 6:40, you're covered either way.
Opening night is also the only night the Balboa Bay Club drone show moves up, to 6:00 p.m. A family that starts at the Holiday Market can do fireworks, the parade at Marina Park, and the market until it closes at 8:00, without moving the car.
The late end of the loop has most of the waterfront dinner tables
The official Dine & Watch list tells you which waterfront restaurants sit right on the route, and its times fall into two groups. The early group is on the Peninsula. Woody's Wharf at 2318 Newport Blvd. sees the boats at 6:51, and CasaDami, Shorebird and Buona Forchetta in Peninsula Village at 6:52. The Lighthouse Bayview Cafe follows at 6:55, then Newport Landing at 7:14 and Harborside at the Balboa Pavilion at 7:15. At those spots the parade arrives early in the evening, about when you'd be ordering.
The late group runs along West Coast Highway and Lido. A+O Restaurant | Bar at Balboa Bay Resort is at 8:35. Rusty Pelican and GuacAmigos are at 8:43, Louie's by the Bay and Billy's at the Beach at 8:44, The Winery Restaurant and Wine Bar at 8:45, and Lido Marina Village at 8:46. Malibu Farm and Lido Bottle Works come at 8:47 and HanaHaus at 8:48. Ten of the 18 Dine & Watch entries fall in that 13-minute window. If you book a table there, you can finish dinner before the boats come by.
Pricing at the late end is already posted. A+O lists parade-night food-and-beverage minimums from 5 p.m. to close of $150++ per adult and $50++ per child outdoors, or $100++ per adult indoors. Firepits carry minimums of $1,250++ and $2,500++, a deposit is required, and parties of five or more book directly with management. The parade's own viewing page says these restaurants "fill up early, so don't forget to book your reservations, now!"
Lido Marina Village, the 8:46 stop, holds its free "A Decade Dockside" celebration tonight, Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at 3434 Via Lido. The evening includes retailer specials, live music and a short film for the center's 10th anniversary. It's a convenient chance to look at the dockside and the restaurants you might book for December.
The dates that come before December 16
Boat registration for 2026 has already closed, so nobody else can join the parade on the water this year. The Ring of Lights waterfront home-decorating competition is still open. The entry page lists a $35 fee, forms due before noon on Friday, December 11, 2026, and judging on Monday, December 14. Judging happens two days before the first boat leaves Lido, so a decorated dock has to be finished the weekend before the parade.
Shore viewing anywhere on the route is free, and all city parking lots stay open during the parade. The organizers expect thousands of viewers each night and recommend extra travel time and an early arrival. If you're watching from Via Lido North Genoa Beach at 8:53, arriving at 6:30 means a long wait.
