In Ladera Ranch, Halloween Is a Map Before It's a Night

  • October 22, 2026

Aliens have landed at a house in Ladera Ranch. The owners call it Ladera's own Area 51, and the display runs every night from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays it adds surprise alien visitors and what the family calls "intergalactic fog." It even has its own Instagram account, @ladarea51.

It's one pin on a map, and in Ladera Ranch that map does more to shape Halloween than any single event. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year. By then the community calendar will have filled most of the two weeks before it, and much of what happens is built by neighbors in their own front yards. If you only plan for the 31st, you'll miss most of it.

The map is the main event

Ladera Life lists its Halloween Home Decorating Contest Interactive Map as a partnership event running 10/15 to 10/28. Each pin links to a gallery and Google Maps directions. Many also carry notes from the homeowners about when to come and how to see the display. A few are worth knowing about before you load the kids into the car:

  • Area 51. Nightly from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., with fog and alien visitors on weekends.
  • A weekend show that gets darker after 8 p.m. One entry runs a new series of shows every October Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 10 p.m., rain permitting. It ends each night with a special show at 8 p.m. or later, and the owners say the later shows are spookier.
  • Dancing skeletons. Another listing promises skeletons that "waited all year to finally dance their bones off," with "no tricks, just beats."
  • Pumpkins, two ways. One home calls itself the "Pumpkin House," and another has talking pumpkins on weekends.

The notes also handle the logistics. One display faces a pocket park, and its owners ask visitors to park and take the path beside the garage to reach the front of the home. Another faces a side street, not the address on the pin. At least one entry is inside a gate that only opens with a LARMAC access card. Read the notes before you plan a route. Pins that look close together on the map aren't always reachable the same way.

The schedules on the map shape the rest of the month. Area 51 runs every night. The weekend show only runs Friday through Sunday, and since its owners describe the run as October weekends, its last two nights are Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31. That leaves two weekends, this one and next, when the most elaborate displays are all running together. Halloween night is the last of them.

Saturday the 24th has the most on the calendar

The community's own events cluster on the coming weekend, and Saturday, October 24, starts early.

From 7 to 9 a.m., Town Green hosts the first Ladera Run for Hope. The Ladera Ranch Run Club is hosting with LARCS, and the run benefits Breast Cancer Solutions. Registration is linked from the event page.

That evening, from 7 to 10 p.m., the Teen Leadership Council turns Oak Knoll Village Clubhouse into a Haunted Maze and Outdoor Movie Night, with Hotel Transylvania on the screen. It's for students in grades 6 through 12, and registration is required.

The two events don't overlap, and that matters on a map-driven night. A family with a middle schooler can drop them at Oak Knoll at 7. The weekend show starts at 7 and Area 51 runs until 9:30, so younger kids can spend the next few hours walking the displays. On the 24th, the teen maze, the weekend show and Area 51's fog all fall on the same Saturday night, and the maze is a one-night event.

Wednesday the 28th belongs to the library

Halfway through the week, the Orange County Public Library's Ladera Ranch branch holds its annual Boo Bash Costume Parade & Party. It runs Wednesday, October 28, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., and the library is clear that everyone is welcome to dress up. Kids walk a catwalk in costume, followed by seasonal activities, and the event is listed for all ages.

October 28 is also the last day in Ladera Life's listing window for the decorating map. An after-school costume parade on the same day works as an early dress rehearsal. Costumes get their first outing at 3:30 on a Wednesday, three days before the doorbell rush.

Halloween starts at noon at Mercantile West

When the 31st comes, the first big event isn't after dark. Mercantile West hosts Alohaween, a free Halloween celebration with a tropical theme, from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. The program includes trick-or-treating, photos with Moana and Maui, Hula Zombie Stilt Walkers, mini pumpkin decorating, balloon twisting and a DJ. The center says it's free and open to all, and costumes are encouraged.

After Alohaween wraps at 3, the evening moves back to the streets, where Area 51 starts at 6:30 and the weekend show runs its final October night from 7 to 10. Ladera Life's Heritage Farm field-trip listing also starts on 10/31, with 1 to 5 p.m. visits on McGwire Road. Those are booked visits for small groups of up to 15 children, and sending the request form doesn't guarantee a reservation, so they need booking ahead and aren't a drop-in stop.

Dinner on the way back from the creek

There's also a new dinner option in neighboring Rancho Mission Viejo. Creekside Restaurant & Bar opened to the public on October 12 at Sendero Marketplace, 30865 Gateway Place. TimesOC reported that it's the eighth restaurant from Russ Bendel's RJB Restaurant Group, which also runs Sapphire, Parlor Woodfire Kitchen and Bloom.

The name comes from the land behind it. Bendel told TimesOC that he and his partners had a list of 20 names and none of them felt right. "San Juan Creek runs directly behind the restaurant and that sparked the conversation that led to the name Creekside," he said.

What matters for a Halloween evening is the setup. Creekside opens at 4 p.m. every day. It has high-top bar tables near the TVs, booths, and a covered patio that seats up to 60. The menu is everyday American food. Starters include chili cheese fries with smoked cheddar queso and an albacore tuna tartare with scallion ponzu. Bigger plates include the American Wagyu burger that RJB serves across its restaurants, a double-cut pork chop with macaroni and cheese, and pan-roasted rainbow trout. The bar pours Webb's Coast IPA from Webb's Grain Works in Aliso Viejo, and the cocktail list includes the Reverse, made with vodka, crème de peach and serrano. Reservations and the full menu are on Creekside's site.

A 4 p.m. opening fits the schedule. Dinner at Creekside can come before the 6:30 start of the nightly displays, so the evening ends on the streets, not at a table.

Two things on the community calendar that won't wait

Halloween week shares the calendar with some community business. Voting in the LARMAC Board of Directors election closes Friday, October 30, 2026, at 5 p.m., the same evening the weekend show opens its final weekend. The Annual Meeting follows on November 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Oak Knoll Village Clubhouse, and it's open to members.

If your usual clubhouse is Flintridge Village, plan on Oak Knoll for anything this fall. Flintridge Village Clubhouse is closed for renovations through December 2026, with reopening expected in January 2027. Ladera Life's amenity status page still lists the Flintridge pool as open. Wagsdale Dog Park was scheduled to reopen October 16 at 3 p.m., weather permitting, after its seasonal maintenance closure. The same page carries the live status for both.

If there's a Ladera Ranch Halloween display you never miss, or a newer one you think deserves more visitors, the team at Mint Real Estate wants to hear about it. We keep track of what makes each village feel like home, and the front-yard shows on this map are part of it.
